Marathi typing for government exams

Maharashtra state exams (MPSC, ZP, and other state recruitment) require Marathi typing in Devanagari script. The standard layout for modern exams is Mangal INSCRIPT. Marathi shares 95% of characters with Hindi — if you already know Hindi typing, Marathi is much easier to learn.

How to learn Marathi typing

1

Check your exam's layout requirement

MPSC and most modern Maharashtra exams use Mangal INSCRIPT. Some older departmental exams use KrutiDev 055. Always check your official notification before starting practice.

2

Learn Marathi-specific characters

Marathi has characters not found in Hindi: ळ (on L key in INSCRIPT), ऱ (ra with nukta), and ॅ (short E vowel sign). Practice these separately — they have different key positions.

3

Practice consonants and matras

Type all 36 Marathi consonants first without any matras. Then add ा, ि, ी, ु, ू, े, ै, ो, ौ in combination. Use the virtual keyboard to verify key positions as you go.

4

Learn conjuncts (जोडाक्षरे)

Marathi writing uses many conjunct consonants. Common ones: क्ष, ज्ञ, त्र, श्र. Practice these specifically — they are typed with halant (्) between consonants.

5

Practice with Marathi exam passages

Once you know the layout, practice using Marathi-specific exam passages. Focus on building to 30 WPM (MPSC minimum) with 95%+ accuracy before your exam.

Tips for Marathi typing

  • If you know Hindi INSCRIPT typing, Marathi INSCRIPT will feel almost identical — the Devanagari key layout is the same.

  • ळ is on the L key in INSCRIPT. It is unique to Marathi and easy to forget — practice it in isolation deliberately.

  • Marathi uses the danda (।) as a full stop, not a period. Make sure you practice this — it is on the period key in INSCRIPT.

  • For KrutiDev: print out the Alt+numpad code table and keep it next to you while learning. There is no need to memorize all codes at once.

  • MPSC typing requires 30 WPM minimum — aim for 35+ during practice to have a comfortable margin on exam day.
